DSM-IV Inattention Symptoms

  1. Misses details

  2. Trouble sustaining attention

  3. Doesn't seem to listen when spoken to directly

  4. Poor follow through on instruction and fails to finish tasks

  5. Difficulty organizing

  6. Avoids, dislikes and is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort

  7. Often loses things necessary for tasks and activities

  8. Often easily distracted by extraneous stimulation

  9. Often forgetful in daily activities

DSMV-IV Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

Hyperactivity

  1. Fidgety with hand and feet

  2. Often leaves seat when sitting is expected

  3. Often runs about or climbs excessively in situations that are not appropriate

  4. Often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly

  5. Often "on the go" or acts as if driven by a motor

  6. Often talks excessively

Impulsivity

  1. Often blurts out answers before questions have been completed

  2. Often has difficulty awaiting turn

  3. Often interrupts or intrudes on others (misses social cues)

A child who displays six of the inattention symptoms and six from Hyperactivity – Impulsivity would be consistent with ADHD diagnosis.  However, only a Neurologist or Psychiatrist is qualified to may this diagnosis.
